What is the difference between the driver side mirror and the mirror fitted to the passenger's side? How does it affect your driving experience? Should you consider this when purchasing aftermarket mirrors?

The fundamental difference between the driver's side mirror and the passenger's side mirror is that the former uses planar glass while the latter uses convex glass. When the two glasses are compared, you will realize that objects viewed through the passenger mirror seem closer to the car. On the other hand, objects viewed through the driver's side seem farther out.

The difference arises primarily because driver side mirrors are situated closer to the eye of the driver as compared to the passenger's side car. A side mirror glass fitted to the passenger side will not give a clear view of the area behind the car if it is planar. The basic purpose of fitting mirror to the side of the car is to have 360° vision. The 180° vision behind the car depends on the rear view mirror fitted to the left, right and the center of the car.

Regulations require the rear view mirror to be fitted inside the car and at the driver's side without fail. Passengers are given the option of fitting mirrors to the passenger's side of the vehicle. However, if the rear view mirror fitted inside the car does not meet the requirements and regulations, then it becomes mandatory to fit car side view mirror on the passenger side as well. As on date, the mirror fitted inside and to the driver's side are offered as standard equipment while the mirror on the passenger side is usually offered as an additional or customized option. The use of convex glass and planar glass in the two mirrors on the sides means that they cannot be interchanged.

Although it is not advisable, amateur driver have the option of focusing on the driver's side mirror and the rear view mirror fitted inside the car. The passenger side mirror can be adjusted to enable the passenger to have a clear view of the rear portion. This option is strictly a temporary one and should be utilized only till the amateur driver gains sufficient confidence to focus on three mirrors at the same point of time. Until then, one can rely on the passenger to advice on lane changes.

Another significant difference between the driver’s side mirror and the passenger side mirror is that the former can be adjusted without stretching or moving out of the driving seat. On the other hand, adjusting the latter usually involves multiple attempts as one has to work on a trial and error method. Of course, using electronic mirrors make it easier to adjust the same. A flick of the wrist is enough to adjust the mirrors as the driver wants.
